Andrew Hess--The Campus Killer Review and Spotlight

Synopsis:
Ali Ryan has dreamed of being a hot shot detective that solves high profile cases. Her love for crime novels and police dramas was her inspiration to become a cop, but it was her pushy demeanor and sassy impulsive attitude that earned her the detective promotion she coveted. But is your dream job worth sacrificing the ones you love?

The fall semester for New Paltz has begun complete with a dead body turning up in the dorms. Police claim the case is open and shut, but Detective Ali Ryan doesn’t think so. She throws herself into the case desperately searching for answers as the death toll on campus rises; each made to look like a suicide.

With Ali getting closer to uncovering the truth, the killer wants to make his attacks more personal. His sights are set on Detective Ryan and her sister. Police are forced to place them under their protection, but Ali is determined to hunt down the killer and stop him before he kills again. But how far is Detective Ryan willing to go to protect her sister and take down the sadistic killer?

My Review:
While not my usual genre, as of late, I'm trying to get more into suspense/mystery novels since my next release will be a series of romantic suspense stories.  This had elements of romance in it, but the primary focus was the suspense, which was well done.  Mr. Hess has pulled together a chilling story of revenge from the madman's perspective and his final descent into lunacy.  Told in multiple POVs, in first person from the detective as she unravels the clues, and third person from the killer as well as various other characters, it is a risky writing style, but done effectively.  In fact, Mr. Hess is as effective with this technique as some of the bigger names in the genre.  I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a change from the erotic thrillers out there, as it was refreshing to me to not read all the sex (I know, I blaspheme!).  This was an enjoyable read, and lovely departure from my norm.  There were a few typos/editing mistakes that could have been improved upon, but they didn't detract too much from the story, in my opinion.

Falling for Cyn and its difficulties

I'm in the middle of a rough draft that is kicking my ass.  Hard.

Readers of my Four Winds series have spoken, and I am trying to comply with others' wishes.  If you haven't read any of those books, the first one's free on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Kobo, and Smashwords.

Throughout the course of writing this series, I would get emails from readers wanting to know if I planned on writing Damien's story.  I politely replied, no.  Damien is the antagonist throughout the series, and by the fourth and final story, I had gotten so many enquiries, I decided to go for it.

It took months for me to wrap my head around it, since Damien is also known as THE DEVIL.  Why people want Satan to get his own HEA was beyond me, and I wondered if maybe I hadn't done a good enough job of making him EVIL in the series.

But I see their point.  The series is about redemption, and holds a lot of Christian ideals in it, mixed with tons of sex, cuz that's how I roll.  So why not?  Of course, now I'm committed (or should be anyway) and here we go with Damien's story.

I'm not great at writing bad guys.  It's not my strong suit, hence, I believe, my dilemma.  I'm not even good at alpha men, because I think alpha men are possessive, controlling, borderline abusive jerks.  So Damien's story is being difficult.

I have an outline, and I'm trying to follow it.  But I cannot relate to this particular story.  It's not mine.  And here is where I think my problem is.

Working through it will be fun, time consuming, and probably brutal.  But I'm a woman of my word, and Damien will get his.

Hopefully.

Interview:

1.  Describe your writing process.

First, thank you so much for having me, Anne. I’m so happy to be here. J

My writing process is elaborate. When a muse hits me for a story, I write down as much of it as I can. When that process finishes, I look at the story, the basic plot, and find ways to make it better. I plot out the story and get that written out. Then I go back to writing. At this stage, I mostly cringe when my characters don’t want to follow the wonderful plot I’ve created, but I let them be who they are and adjust as I go until finished.

So, okay, maybe it’s not elaborate, but it really keeps me busy.

2.  What motivates you to sit down and write?

Time. I’ve never had to force myself to write because I love creating stories. It is truly my favorite thing to do. I’m either hoping for time to do what I love or I’m writing.

3.  Where does your inspiration come from?

My inspiration comes from everywhere. My past and present experiences, the news, articles, pictures, music, etc. One of my favorite things about writing is when I hear or see a glimpse of something and a “What if…” question pops into my head. I can’t even count the number of story ideas that have started that way.

4.  What is your biggest challenge?

This is the easiest question – Marketing! Always marketing.

5.  Do you ever experience writer's block?  How do you get through it?

Yes, I experience writer’s block like every other author. For me, I think it’s from overworking. I just get to a point where I need to cool down and let my brain relax. I never stress about it unless I have a deadline. I veg on movies for two or three days without accessing my computer and it goes away on its own. After that, I can’t wait to get back to my computer and write.

6.  Tell a little about your most recent work.  Title, genre, and tag line.

My most recent release, Wanted: Vampire – Written in Blood, is the final book in the Wanted: Vampire trilogy. It’s a full length paranormal romance.

Tagline: Malik Drake is sexy as hell and completely irresistible, but the bad boy is also engaged to her mother.

7.   Is/are there specific themes that you would like your reader to grasp while their reading your novel?

“Overcoming fear and weakness” is a big one in the Egyptian Duet (which I just completed). In the second and final book, Wrath of the Egyptian Goddess, Cleo has a lot of problems dealing with the horrible curse from her past, and to make matters worse, it seems to be resurrecting itself. As it slithers, drawing a wedge between her and Calvin, her self-destructive tendencies don’t help the situation. Temptation is calling to her, and ultimately, she must learn to overcome not one but two demons which haunt her. I’m hoping to release this book in January or February of this year!

8.  What makes a good story?

If it’s interesting, brilliant in some way, and it sticks with you – I call that a great story.

9.  Do you have a current work in progress?  Can you tell a little bit about it?

Yes, I always do. I’m really excited about this one because it’s an entirely new genre for me – psychological suspense. Like all my books, it will contain a paranormal element so I’m not straying too far from my base. I started writing it several years ago, and it’s been sitting in a lonely file, unfinished. Luckily, the muse has returned in full force.

10.  Tell us about yourself, outside of writing.

I live in a small town, and I work full time. I have three beautiful boys at home, two dogs, and a Siamese cat. Spending time with my family is important to me, and it’s also a lot of fun because we all share a similar interest in the paranormal.

Al Daltrey

By day I work in Marketing, which involves a fair amount of writing. Therefore, I never really had an interest to write for pleasure. When you do it all day, the last thing you want to do when you get home, is more writing. All the while, as my career progressed, so did my involvement in the BDSM lifestyle.
This interest in kinky sex started in my University years. Like most men, I loved meeting women, and especially the occasional one who didn’t mind being tied up, or blindfolded, or spanked. All sex was great, but kinky sex was more exciting, more exhilarating, and more fulfilling.

Over the years I was lucky enough to meet my fair share of submissive women. And don’t for a minute think these women were weak. Outside the bedroom they were confident, opinionated, gregarious and self-assured. However, inside the bedroom (so to speak) they wanted to feel the strong firm hand of a dominant man taking complete control.

Eventually I found the perfect partner, and am happily in a relationship.

One day, I flipped my laptop open, and to my surprise - I had an urge to write a BDSM story. Soon I had 20 pages, then 40, then 60. The novel that resulted was ‘Testing the Submissive’. The response was overwhelmingly positive, and the reviews excellent - all of which motivated me to continue writing. ‘A Condo With Two Views’ is my second full length novel, with other projects in the works. If you decide to give any of my writing a try, I hope you enjoy it!

Testing The Submissive

eXcess - Testing the Submissive
Abby stood nervously before her Master in the classic submissive pose: fully nude, legs apart, wrists placed behind her back; deeply ashamed of her evident arousal. Worse, she had to recount in exact detail the proceedings of her last whipping. The whipping had been severe; as was the case with most of the clients she was commissioned to serve. These client appointments were scheduled a few weeks apart, in order that the welts, bruises and whatever other marks were left behind had ample time to heal. After all, each new client - whether male, female, a couple, or even a group - surely deserved a fresh canvas upon which to begin. Despite these harsh sessions, her body reacted like that of a wanton whore as she retold of the sadistic punishments and extreme sexual use inflicted upon her body.
How far would her Master push her with these ‘tests’? How far would Abigail go? How many times could she stand before him blushing; yet with that unmistakable tingle? Their relationship was surely headed for a collision course. Or was it?

This story contains STRONG BDSM. While fully consensual, it includes submission, dominance, sadism and masochism. Please do NOT buy or read this if you are offended by graphic sexual descriptions including sexual violence. All characters are aged 25+, and it is recommended for an adult audience ONLY (aged 21+). This story is pure fiction and the author does not condone any violent behavior.

Ella Dominguez

Ella is a full-time mom, wife, healthcare worker, and wanna be switch. She was born and raised in a sexually repressed, strict Christian household in the bible belt of the USA. This upbringing and repression contributed to her wicked imagination and writing has been her only outlet for her sexual fantasies. Finally at the ripe and sexually primed age of 40, she mustered up enough courage to share her naughty thoughts and put pen to paper. She sincerely hopes to find her niche in writing erotica in all forms, be it romance or paranormal.
“I don’t consider myself an author. I consider myself an avid reader above all else, and someone who simply writes the stories that the characters in my head tell me to.”

Grace Street

eXcess - Grace Street
Warning: This is neither a conventional romance nor a traditional love story. There are no hearts and flowers on the pages of this book. The heroine doesn’t always make wise choices and though I’ve tried to make her strong, she’s often times weak in the face of the fierce hero. The hero is not a knight in a shining armor. He’s broken and frequently cruel, and what every woman in the real world should avoid. What’s contained in this book isn’t real - it’s fiction; dark, depraved and decadent make-believe. Contains detailed sexual encounters, profanity, uncomfortable situation, and erotic elements including voyeurism, oral and anal. INTENDED FOR READERS 18+.
Obsession, possession, resilience, insanity—

Seeking solitude and reprieve from her past failed relationships, Elsa begins her life anew in Richmond, hoping to find the change that she so desperately needs. Things are looking up for her, a new job, new friends— a fresh start.

But Victor has different plans for her. From the moment he heard her voice and set his eyes on Elsa, she became next on his to-do list; his Chapter 8. A well-known and respected criminal profiler, his mind is as dark as the people he hunts down. It takes one to know one, after all. Under the guise of making his subjects stronger, he intends to break Elsa down using everything in his arsenal, including pleasure, pain, humiliation, and things unspeakable. Everyone is fair game in his book and he discriminates against no one when he chooses his test subjects.

Lonely, still on the mend from a bad break-up and longing for sexual attention, Elsa consents to an odd proposition, unaware of Victor’s plans. However, she can’t be broken so easily and what he puts her through only fuels the fire burning within her, a flame that begins to blaze out of control as she becomes obsessed with everything about Victor and peeling back his cruel layers in search of the real man hiding beneath his heartless facade.

In Victor’s world, there is no such thing as happily ever after and Chapter 8 proves to be an infuriating challenger when she flips the tables on his selfish and twisted game, a game they both may end up losing their hearts and minds over.

The Best Laid Plans of Boys and Men

Once upon a time, I wrote a short story for an anthology.  The anthology didn't do all that well, and after about six months or so, I decided to re-write the story, and make it longer.  It's a cute story, fluffy, not like most of the Stories of Serendipity.  But I like it, and the readers that I've heard from so far like it too.

This go-around, I'm trying out KU, so at the moment, The Best Laid Plans of Boys and Men is only available on Kindle.  But it's FREE to KU members, so I'm hoping it will help me gain some exposure and maybe even a few new fans...

The Best Laid Plans of Boys and Men tells the story of the whirlwind May/December romance between Taylor and Alexander. While Taylor is completely caught off guard by Alexander’s maturity and the difference between him and every other boy she’s dated, Alexander’s busy trying to figure out how to tell her he’s the lawyer suing her pants off.

Here is the Amazon Link

I hope everyone enjoys this little story of mine, about Alexander and Taylor.  I sure did enjoy writing it!

Excerpt from the first chapter of The Best Laid Plans of Boys and Men:

Alexander

The bell tinkling over the door announced his entrance into The Unique Hairtique, and Alexander was immediately assaulted by the scents of chemicals and shampoo.  Why did women put this shit on their hair?  This was why he went to a barber shop for his trims.  Clean smells were what he was used to, not this…

“Hi!  Can I help you?” He looked into the eyes of an angel—eyes which were a deep hazel, moss green fading to an earthy brown at the edges.  She was standing at the station nearest to the door, sweeping hair from the floor.

“Uh…yeah.”  He found himself swallowing past a sudden lump in his throat, wondering where it had come from.  Alexander Gibson was never at a loss for words, but the dark blonde hair piled into a messy bun with tendrils artfully escaping called to him.  “I need a trim.”

“I can get you.  Come have a seat.”  She emptied the dustpan into a trash can and opened a drawer on a rolling cart, whipping out a smock for him to wear.  “Same style, just a little shorter, right?”  Her fingers ran through his dark hair, sending a tremor of goose bumps up his arms.  They toyed with the silvery hairs at his temples, lightly plucking the shock of hair over his forehead.  “You like this long on top?  Or do you want it out of the way?”

“What do you think?”  For some reason he wanted her opinion.  She was quite a bit younger than him, but he was fascinated by her—her lips, her eyelashes, the rosy bloom on her cheeks.  He’d always had that shock of hair there; he didn’t particularly like his hair super-short.  It was one of his best features, not that he was vain about it, but women seemed to like to play with that particular part.

“I think it’s sexy,” she grinned at Alexander, and he felt a stirring under the smock at the way her lips formed the word.  He thought she was sexy too, but he kept that to himself.

He grinned back at her, suddenly feeling twenty years younger.  “Then I’ll keep it.”  He watched as she grabbed the spray bottle from the cart to wet his hair.  “Um… can I get the works?  A shampoo and everything?”  He suddenly wanted to prolong this experience.  What had started as a chore had turned into something he needed to savor.  He’d never had everything done for him at his barber shop, but the need to feel this angel’s hands in his hair was suddenly extreme.

Her eyes widened in surprise, but that was the only reaction to a man asking for the pampering afforded by a place like this.  Most men he knew only let the stylist wet their hair and then cut it.  She swiftly hung the spray bottle back on the cart and smiled again.  Her smile aligned something in Alexander’s insides.  This woman was doing something to him, and he couldn’t explain it.  Nor did he want her to stop.

“Sure.  Follow me back here.”  She turned and strode to the back of the shop where a row of sinks waited.  He watched her backside move under the tight black capris she wore, pretending he had ex-ray vision, ridiculously glad for the smock hiding his stiffy.

Five minutes later, Alexander was officially in some erotic heaven he’d never experienced before, and he’d completely forgotten why he’d come here in the first place, only that he never wanted to leave.  “…Christ…”  Words could not describe the feelings of her hands on his head, massaging his scalp, running through his hair, lathering it up.  “That feels so good.”  He looked up at her to see a smirk on her face.

“It’s the best part of the whole hair-cutting experience.”  Her smirk turned to a wicked grin, and Alexander was helpless to stop his raging boner.  He crossed his legs to hide the bulge.  Instead, he focused on what he could see of the woman hovering over him, rocking back and forth with her movements.

This was quite possibly the most sensual thing he’d ever experienced.  While she washed, his eyes crept to her exposed cleavage and the black lace peeking from the black v-neck t-shirt she wore.  He watched the cleavage bounce—smooth white skin, marked with a tiny mole at the top of her left breast—as she lathered his hair vigorously.  Her toned biceps and forearms flexed with the movements, and he was powerless to do anything besides close his eyes and relax with a groan.  As soon as his eyes closed, her scent overwhelmed him—a light floral scent, mixed with an underlying musk that screamed female.  He inhaled deeply, desperate to cling to the images of skin sliding across skin, tangled sheets, and sweat that suddenly invaded his mind.
