“The bed’s comfortable.” A sexy grin rumpled the corners of his mouth. “I come here whenever I can get away from the city.”

Alone? Laura wanted to ask, but didn't, in case she didn't like the answer. A sudden thought occurred to her. What if … what if their definitions of marriage differed?

“Alex.” She licked suddenly dry lips, barely aware that he’d caught the small movement and turned all his attention on her. “When … when you said a real marriage …” she paused. This was so awkward. Why on earth hadn't she thought of this before she’d married him?

“I meant a real marriage.” He pulled her towards him, until there was barely an inch of space separating their bodies.

Finding it hard to think, let alone breathe, Laura tried again. “Yes, but what about … other people?”

He scowled. “There won’t be any one else in our marriage, Laura,” he said firmly. “Just you and me.”

Relief flooded through her. “Okay,” she whispered, allowing herself to relax in his embrace.

The next instant, he tightened his arms around her. “I hope we’re clear on this point,” he growled.

“Very,” she managed to utter, before he kissed her.

His lips claimed hers, his tongue demanding immediate entry. Surrendering with a small sigh, Laura curled her arms around his neck as he deepened the kiss.

EXCERPT –

"Cassandra," the strange man called, his voice deep and melodic at the same time. My heart skipped a beat when I heard my name on his lips. "I am so glad you’re finally here." He walked toward me, all grace and easiness, and I had to remind myself to breathe, chiding myself for being nervous about a strange man in a dream.

"Do I know you?" I asked as he stopped in front of me and smiled down at me familiarly. I frowned at him. He was taller than I was, my head not quite reaching his chin, and I had to look up at him, resisting the urge to stretch onto my toes to get a better look at his eyes.

"Not yet," he admitted, "but I have been waiting for you nonetheless. My name is Aleksander. I am your Caomhnóir."

"My what? What’s a kweevrore?" I stumbled over the unfamiliar word, trying to mimic the way it had rolled off his tongue.

"Your Caomhnóir. Like a guardian or protector," he said, a ghost of a smile playing at the corners of his mouth from the way I’d tested out the unfamiliar word.

"And what is it exactly you think you are guarding me from?” I asked, my eyes glancing suspiciously over the trees as the branches rustled with a breeze.

"I am not your guard, Cassandra.”  He smirked at me as if the thought of guarding me was somehow amusing. "I am your guardian, your mentor. I am here to guide you during your time here in Otherworld." He spread his arms wide and gestured to the lush landscape surrounding us.

I scowled. "Please don't call me Cassandra. Only my grandfather calls me Cassandra. "

"What would you like to be called then?"

"Call me Cassie," I said. "What is Otherworld?"

"All right then, Cassie. It’s hard to describe in mortal terms, but I will try," he said with a grin, reaching out and taking my hand in his.

I inhaled sharply when his hand touched mine. My palm tingled strangely, and a strange heat passed briefly between us. I wondered if he had felt it as well. He caught my gaze, his startled green eyes mirroring my own before he looked down at our hands, studying them.

I was sure he had felt that sizzle too.  I was starting to get curious. I couldn't recall ever actually feeling in my dreams before. Unless you counted my nightmares.  Somehow I always felt those as if they were real. Was this a nightmare?

When I thought about it, I realized that I shouldn't be able to taste the salt in the air or smell the woodsy aroma of the trees around us. I frowned with confusion. This dream was far too real for my taste, and it was starting to make my head hurt.

"The Otherworld is the land of the Fae," Aleksander explained patiently. He tucked my arm under his, turning and leading me down the beach. The waves swept gently up the beach and over my feet, deliciously warm and again bothering me because I knew that I shouldn't be able to feel the warmth.

"The Fae? You mean like faeries?” I asked finally, trying not to think too much about how disturbingly real it all was even as I relished the feeling of the warm water and the sand.  It had been so long since I had seen the ocean, and strange as this all was, I wasn’t in that dark clearing sniveling and waiting to be killed.

"The Fae are...well, for lack of a better term, yes, Faeries. We are what is left of the guardians of the realms of dreams."

He must have seen the look of confusion on my face because he patted my hand reassuringly, drawing me closer to his side as he led me across the glittering sand. My breath caught in my throat. Under any other circumstance, strolling down a beautiful beach hand in hand with a gorgeous man would be happy dream. Instead, I was overwhelmed and felt panic starting to build within me. My heart beat rapidly and my breath sped up as if adrenaline were beginning to flow.

"This place is our home. It lies outside of the mortal realm, on a different plane of existence, but one that runs parallel to it. I know that probably doesn't make any sense to you yet, but it will with time.”

"Are you seriously trying to tell me that I'm in some kind of alternate dimension here?” I asked, frustrated and confused.  “Oh man, I've got to lay off the Supernatural reruns before bed."

A different realm of existence? Those cheap grocery store cakes were off the shopping list permanently. All those preservatives had probably fried my brain. Becca was right. It was time to go organic. Science fiction and junk food obviously had dire consequences when combined.

"You are a Síofra,” he said, ignoring my outburst.

“Sheefra?” I repeated, stumbling over the unfamiliar word.  What weird language was he speaking?

He stopped and turned to face me so quickly that I walked into him. I could feel his breath on my cheeks as he looked down at me, bringing his hands to my upper arms and holding them gently as if bracing me for something important.

"You, Cassandra Matthews, are a changeling."

She slipped past him, and onto the wings of the stage. Her gaze fell on Mr. Voice who was tall, dark and smokin’ hot.
Holy shit, I want to lick him.
Scuffed combat boots were laced up over black leather pants that clung to muscular thighs, and his black shirt molded to the most impressive set of abs she had ever seen. Roxy wanted to trace the ridges with her fingertips.
He turned, his voice dropping low as his eyes locked on hers. His words enveloped her. “… you’re the only one.”
Her heart paused a beat before slamming into her chest at a rapid pace. His full mouth lifted into a grin that spoke of confidence as he held her full attention. Entranced, she fell deep into his eyes and the world stopped.
Until a drumstick hit him in the head. He looked over his shoulder and shrugged sheepishly at his drummer before turning back to launch into the next verse.
Mikey gently shook her shoulder. “Hey, Rox, come on. We have to warm up.”
Her head bobbed in a nod at her brother, but she didn't look over. She muttered, “Yeah, give me a minute,” or longer.
As if he heard, Mr. Voice glanced over and winked at her before the next song started. “Blinded by beauty, falling at first sight, head over heels…” There was raw passion in his voice, and she couldn't help wishing he was singing about her.

My Review:

On the whole, I really enjoyed this book.  The sex, while repetitive, was great and super hot.  I liked the way the paranormal aspects were handled.  This was a nice story, with a great arc, fun characters, and an alpha male that was just the way I like them: Not Assholey.  Although he tended to get a little whiney and repetitive toward the end.

The ending did seem sort of rushed to me, and things were glossed over that I wished had more details, like the fight scenes, for example.  I wanted fights much more epic.  Overall, though this was a great escape read.

EXCERPT:

The phrase resistance is futile has a whole new meaning. He pushes open my legs and strokes his hand up and down my center. As much as I want him to stop, I can’t seem to verbalize my plea. My hips meet his hand and he continues the friction of fingers. He pauses to slide up my dress baring the bottom of me. I’ve never been the type to want to have sex in public, but god does he make me want to. He skims his tongue across my neck and the act nearly sends my body into spasms. He finds his way inside my lace underwear.

“I want you.” His words set my nerves on fire. He slowly parts me, slipping his fingers inside me. His fingers rock back and forth against me as he delves deeper inside. I’m lost in oblivion. Falling father and farther down the rabbit hole and I can’t seem to stop myself. He presses against my clit and I nearly lose it. He growls lightly against my ear as he plants his lips below it. The sensation sends my head spinning. I need to stop.

Nicholas loosens his grip of my wrists and reaches down toward my breasts with his free hand. His thumb circles my right nipple and it grows hard beneath his finger. He leans forward and places it in his mouth, leaving a damp warm spot on my dress.

“I want you to come for me, baby.”

The words aren’t said with a silent plea. No, the way he says it is more of a command. I honestly haven’t felt wanted like this since Miles. He wasn’t always a caring lover. A lot of the times he was just selfish. The thought of him sends a pang to my chest. Cheating on me was the most selfish thing he ever did. But how am I any better? Here I am, letting Nicholas touch me.

“Where’d you go, sweetheart?” Nicholas asks, breathing heavily. He caresses my cheek drawing my attention back to him.

“Stop,” I whisper. I can’t give myself up like this. He doesn’t get to see that part of me. He doesn’t get to unravel me just to watch me break. It frightens me to want him. It frightens me that someone like him could make me forget everything. Including myself.

“Wait,” he says, grabbing my waist, but I don’t. I push his hands off and yank my dress down. I don’t look back. I just push past him and run out of there as fast as I can. In the distance I can hear him calling after me. I don’t think anyone’s ever told him no, but he’ll get over it. I’m just another girl to him. Someone he thinks he can have without any conditions.

My Review:

Bound To You has been a highly anticipated release on my part for the better part of a year.  And aside from the whole cliffhanger madness, which I told Ms. Booke I hate, and she wrote anyway (the nerve), it's an amazing debut novel.  It starts with a bang and ends with a knee to the balls.  What more could you ask for?  Nicholas is an alpha, bordering on asshole, with reasons behind his assholiness, who manages to piss off Rebecca immensely, while simultaneously turning her on beyond belief.  This is written well, both characters' actions and motivations believable. Rebecca is a feisty woman, hellbent on her own independence, managing to capture the reader's heart.  This book is short, sweet, and leaves me wanting more.  NOW!

The Riding Master

Synopsis
A woman finding her way.
After a devastating divorce, an emotionally skittish Rayne Masterson swears off men and vows to devote her life to her passion, horses.

A man with insatiable desires.
Trent Newbury is an expert rider who is arrogant, brash, and has a ruthless reputation for getting any woman he desires.

As the new riding master at Southland Stables, Trent is eager to make sure all of his riders are the best they can be. But when he meets Rayne, he takes a special interest in taming the beautiful woman’s stubborn nature. Slowly and deliberately, he weakens her defenses with his charm and beguiling good looks. And just when he thinks he has won Rayne’s trust, his philandering past threatens to pull them apart.

She thought no man could ever touch her heart, until she met…The Riding Master.

Excerpt
His swagger was the first thing that stood
out in her mind. The sway of his hips exuded a ruthless overconfidence, but as
her eyes traveled up from the curve of his blue jeans to his wide chest and
thick, tanned arms, her temperature began to quickly climb. When she was within
a few feet of him, his thin lips twisted into a devilish smile, almost a
teasing smirk that Rayne found more offensive than alluring.
What an asshole, she thought as he
drew near.

She curiously studied the square curve of his jaw and his slightly bent
nose. His hair was thick, wavy, almost black, and was in need of a good trim.
His sunken cheekbones accentuated the tan on his face, while his high brow was
etched with a few worry lines that complimented instead of detracted from his
appearance. When he lowered his sunglasses, she noted the way his riveting gray
eyes drank in her figure.

Rayne concluded that she could never be interested in such an obvious
man. She was used to men ogling her buxom figure; her ex-husband used to do it
all the time when they had first started dating. But what was exciting in her
twenties, she now found repugnant in her thirties, making her wonder if all the
real gentlemen had gone the way of the dodo bird.

“You’re Rayne Greer, right?” His voice was a lot smoother than when he
had been shouting at his students. Tinged with a lustful, smoky quality that
many women would have found alluring, Rayne felt her uneasiness with the man
begin to gnaw at her.

Ignoring his engaging eyes, she gathered up Bob’s reins. “Yes, I’m Rayne
Greer,” she flatly stated, deciding to play it cool.

He held out a thick hand to her. “Trent Newbury, the new riding master
for Southland Stables. Rebecca Harmon told me about you. She said you were
great with kids.”

When Bob rubbed his head against her back, eager to move on, Rayne
turned away from his outstretched hand to the horse beside her. “Yes, I teach
the under twelve and beginners groups for Rebecca on the weekends.”

He lowered his hand to his side, unaffected by her snub. “Rebecca told
me you showed a lot of potential.” He eyed the slender dark bay thoroughbred.
“Is this your mount?”

“Yes, he’s a racetrack rescue Rebecca sold me a year ago.” Rayne rubbed
Bob’s long neck. “Where’s your horse?”

“Don’t have one right now. I just sold my mare a few weeks back.” He
took a step closer to her, making Bob give a short snort of surprise. “He’s
high spirited,” Trent remarked, giving Bob’s neck a pat.

“Careful,” Rayne warned. “He doesn’t like strangers, especially men.”

Bob turned his head and tried to nip at Trent’s arm.

Trent chuckled. “Where did he learn that trick, from you?”

“No.” She shifted uneasily on her feet, uncomfortable with the close
proximity of the man. “He was abused by jockeys and trainers when he raced on
the track. No man could get near him when Rebecca first bought him. I started
working with him in hopes of turning him into a schooling horse. After a time,
I opted to buy him…or my ex bought him for me.” She noticed the way Bob seemed
to calm as Trent’s powerful hand glided over his back.

“Ex?” Trent’s sharp eyes returned to Rayne. “You’re divorced.”

Rayne was surprised by the way his slight smile instantly warmed his
unsettling features. All of his cocky assurance disappeared and he seemed
almost genuine.

“You have the most intriguing eyes,” he murmured, staring at her. “There
are flecks of gold amid the hazel in them.”

Rayne’s toes curled in her black riding boots. “I, ah….” She diverted
her eyes to Bob. “I’m surprised he’s letting you get that close.”

“I have a way with horses. They find me…irresistible.”
So much for seeming genuine, she
reflected. “That must be a great comfort to you,” she sharply returned.
“Knowing you have such sway over four-legged animals like that. Or were you
talking about another kind of animal?”

His eyebrows went up. “Well, well, not only does your horse have spirit,
his rider seems to as well.”
“Perhaps you are confusing spirit with
sarcasm, Mr. Newbury.”

He grinned at her, folding his thick arms over his chest. “It’s Trent,
and I think you’re wrong. You have to have a good bit of spirit and wit in
order to be sarcastic. Telling people what you think of them takes a hell of a
lot of guts, too.”

“Guts or stupidity? There’s a difference. One usually gets you into
trouble, and the other is needed to get you out of it.”

Trent’s roaring laughter reverberated throughout the shed row. “Wow,
you’re a little fireball, aren’t you?” He unfurled his arms. “Are you always
like this? Or is this just for my benefit?”

     Rayne’s patience with the arrogant
man had reached a turning point and she longed for their encounter to end.
“Nice meeting you, Trent. I’m sure I’ll see you around.”

My Review:
I have to say, this book was a bit of a let down for me.  After reading the blurb, I was super excited to read the book, almost 'squee-ing' when I finally got the arc in my in box.  So let me break it down into what I liked vs what I didn't like.

I liked the way the relationships between Rayne and her friends, at both jobs.  Her characteristics were displayed quite nicely through these interactions.  I loved the premise and the plot line.  The blurb is what drew me in, and the plot flowed and arced wonderfully.  I love horse stories.

This is a personal thing:  There's a fine line between Alpha, and nosy, controlling, asshole.  In my opinion, Trent crossed that line on the first date.  I didn't like him until the end, when I should have been rooting for him from the get-go.  I think he was my biggest problem with the story, and I'm probably alone in that, but because of my dislike of the main character, I found myself easily distracted and this book was hard for me to get into and finish.  But I finished.

I'm glad I finished this book.  Overall, it was a good read, and if you like your heroes alpha to the max, then you'll probably like Trent better than I did.
